Senior A Timbermen release 2021 lacrosse schedule

NANAIMO — The 2020 lacrosse season was cancelled but the Nanaimo Senior A Timbermen are hopeful there will be games in 2021.

The Western Lacrosse Association has released a shortened 12 game schedule featuring one home and one away matchup between all seven teams.

Timbermen president Chris Bowman said having a schedule is a good first step to getting a season going but health restrictions will be the deciding factor with the WLA putting safety above all else.

“It’s going to come from the provincial health authority whether we’re allowed to play with fans or even play without fans. We’re planning a season but our biggest concern is to keep everyone safe from referees to players, staff and our fans.”

The Timbermen have been waiting to get back on the floor since losing to Victoria in the opening round of the playoffs in August of 2019.

As soon as the league announced Nanaimo’s season would begin in New Westminster on June 24 Bowman started to get calls from his players.

“My phone was blowing up all day with players asking ‘is there for real, is this going to happen.’ They are so excited right now.

Nanaimo will have six home games with three at Frank Crane Arena and the other three at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Renovations at Frank Crane Arena will take the Tmen out of their regular home for the back half of the regular season and potentially playoffs.

Plans are ongoing to hold a Mann Cup national championship in September in Ontario.

The event was cancelled in 2020 for the first time since the national championship era began in 1926.

The Junior A and Junior B Tier 1 Timbermen are also working to get seasons underway with a condensed schedule.
