NANAIMO — Island Health has discovered an additional case of COVID-19 at Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence in Nanaimo.

In a statement released Saturday, Jan. 23, the health authority announced a staff member had tested positive on Thursday, Jan. 21 during a round of testing.

Island Health has completed contact tracing and reached out to anyone who came in close contact with the staff member.

The staff member was working in one of the same units on the first floor previously affected by the outbreak and is currently at home isolating.

It’s the second staff member at Chartwell Malaspina to contract COVID-19. Seven residents have also tested positive.

Residents who tested positive were confined to their rooms for the duration of their isolation. The units themselves were cut off from the remainder of the building.

No additional cases had been discovered since Jan. 6 with multiple rounds of testing yielding no positive results until now.

The outbreak remains isolated to two units on the first floor of the home.

Island Health said in the statement over 400 tests were administered to residents and staff since the outbreak was confirmed on Dec. 27.
