NANAIMO — It’s hoped Nanaimo can host one of B.C.’s largest sporting events.

Councillors will discuss supporting a bid to host the 2026 games during their finance and audit committee meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

A staff report recommends councillors provide submitting a bid for the four-day event and allocate $110, 000 in cash and in-kind contributions in the 2026 budget if their bid is selected.

“Nanaimo has a proven history of successfully hosting BC Games,” the staff report said. “After the tremendous success of the 2014 BC Summer Games it is timely to take the skills and apply them to hosting another Summer Games in our City.”

The report said the Games inject an estimated $2 million into the local economy. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture provides $625,000 for the administration and operational requirements to successfully host the games.

Nanaimo previously hosted the games in 1985, 2002 and 2014.

The BC Summer Games are held every two years.

It will be held next in 2022 in Prince George, then Maple Ridge in 2024.
