Island Health posts 10 new COVID-19 cases as active cases in B.C. drop slightly

NANAIMO — For the third time in four days, Island Health has recorded 10 new COVID-19 cases.

Island Health has 679 total cases since March with 183 currently active. Of those 99 are in the central Vancouver Island region, 59 are to the south and 25 to the north.

The additions for Island Health were part of 711 across the province, focused again in Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health authorities. A total of 9,058 cases are active out of more than 36,000 total cases, down around 50 from Thursday.

Hospitals in B.C. currently count 338 individuals admitted, 76 of whom are receiving critical care. Twelve people remain in hospital in Island Health, four in critical care.

“The virus is not letting up and neither can we. This weekend, let’s stay small and stay local, so we can slow the spread of the virus in our province,” a statement from the province read.

A spike in fatalities as a result from COVID-19 continued Friday. Twelve people lost their lives due to complications from the virus, the 11th straight update from the province with a death toll of 10 or more.

A total of 492 people have lost their life from COVID-19, mainly seniors in long term care homes.
