NANAIMO — The city’s newest sports franchise now have their official start date.

The Nanaimo NightOwls will take flight on June 1, 2021 as they open their first ever WCL campaign on the road in Wenatchee.

Nanaimo plays its first game at Serauxmen Stadium June 5, part of a two-game series against Seattle. Those games will be followed by the first series against Island-rival Victoria.

The Tuesday, June 8 game against Victoria will be celebrated as the team’s “official” home opener. All games are contingent on whether COVID-19 restrictions allow for provincial or international travel.

Serauxmen Stadium will also host a Canada Day series against Bellingham, with an afternoon matinee on Thursday, July 1.

“The excitement and buzz that has been generated here in Nanaimo so far and with what we hope will be a celebratory return of baseball, we think that Serauxmen Stadium will be the place to be in Nanaimo next summer,” Jim Swanson, NightOwls GM, said in a release.

Swanson added the schedule may change or additional procedures in place depending on provincial and local health guidelines in place next summer.

Initially announced as a WCL expansion team in March 2020, the team adopted the NightOwls moniker in July as a nod to First Nations history.

The team will also play under the Nanaimo Bars name for certain games in recognition of the popular non-bake dessert bar.

The West Coast League is a 15-team collegiate summer league featuring top college prospects. It has served as a launching pad for a growing number of Major League Baseball players.
