Thousands of fish feed local lakes, license sales surge during pandemic

NANAIMO — Nearly 7,000 trout and counting have been piped into lakes in Nanaimo by staff with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC).

The FFSBC stocking report showed six lakes in Nanaimo have been topped with catchable sized rainbow trout since mid October.

Restocked lakes in October:

• Long: 2,000
• Westwood: 2,000
• Green: 1,200
• Colliery #1: 500
• Colliery #2: 500
• Colliery #3: 500

The regularly stocked lakes in Nanaimo have seen more than 17,000 trout placed so far this year, according to the society.

3,000 rainbow trout were delivered to Nanaimo’s Brannen Lake in May, which is stocked less frequently.

Upwards of 200,000 catchable sized rainbow trout are placed into 60 Vancouver Island lakes every year by FFSBC personnel annually.

The pandemic triggered increased interest in freshwater fishing all over North America. The FFSBC released data last month showing licence sales shot up by 14 per cent over last year, while freshwater licence sales for 16 to 24-year-olds increased by 55 per cent.

Gone Fishin’ in Nanaimo reported selling a record number of fishing licenses this year.
