BC Ferries passengers to be forced to vacate closed, lower decks

NANAIMO — An order requiring drivers to leave their parked cars during transit throughout the COVID-19 pandemic is taking effect.

The Transport Canada regulation requires anyone parked on a lower deck to leave their vehicle and come up to the passenger areas or lower decks.

“Enclosed car decks are spaces that represent inherent risk to the travelling public,” a release from BC Ferries said.

Anyone parked on the upper or open car decks can remain in their vehicles.

The regulation requiring passengers leave their lower deck cars was first implemented in October, 2017.

The regulation was waived at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to encourage physical distancing.

More seating space on BC Ferries vessels is also reopening to provide passengers more room to physically distance themselves.

Not complying with the regulation by staying in your car can result in a travel ban or fine.
