Canadian Denis Shapovalov advances to quarterfinals at Italian Open
ROME — Canada’s Denis Shapovalov is heading to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open.
The No. 12 seed from Richmond Hill, Ont., rallied to beat world No. 47 Ugo Humbert of France 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4 in the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 clay-court event on Friday.
Shapovalov, 21, won 85 per cent of points when he got his first serve in and saved all five break-point chances for Humbert.
The Canadian, who is coming off a run to the U.S. Open quarterfinals, will next face No. 15 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria. Dimitrov is 2-0 lifetime against Shapovalov with both wins coming on hard courts.
