Thick wildfire smoke blanket spikes Nanaimo, Oceanside air quality ratings

NANAIMO — Air quality ratings are off the charts across much of Vancouver Island.

Environment Canada’s air quality health index rated Nanaimo’s air at a 10+ rating on Saturday morning as wildfire smoke extensively covered the region.

A 10+ rating is the highest on Environment Canada’s scale and indicates increased risk of irritation or respiatory issues.

People are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, with children and the elderly particularly at risk.

A special air quality statement is in place for most of eastern Vancouver Island, ranging from Campbell River to Nanaimo.

“Smoke forecast models indicate the potential for a significant push of smoke into BC throughout the weekend,” the statement read. “The anticipated smoke trajectory indicates that the areas impacted will grow to the north and east as the weekend progresses with the most widespread impacts expected on Sunday.”

Environment Canada forecasts smoke to remain at 10+ levels into next week.

“If you or those in your care are exposed to wildfire smoke, consider taking extra precautions to reduce your exposure. Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gasses which includes many chemicals that can harm your health.”

Widespread smoke and temperatures in the low to mid 20s are forecast through the weekend.

A change in the weather is expected for the evening of Monday, Sept. 14 and Tuesday, Sept. 15 with a chance of showers both days.
