NANAIMO — The quick response from Nanaimo fire crews and early action from the driver helped prevent a fully involved semi-truck fire from spreading further.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue were called to Vanderneuk Rd. in north Nanaimo just after 10:30 a.m. on Monday to a fully involved vehicle fire at a residential construction site.

The truck was towing a flatbed full of lumber and heading up a small hill to the construction site.

Lt. Mark Overton said the driver of the truck was able to make progress with a fire extinguisher before crews arrived.

“We arrived on scene, the driver was trying to extinguish the fire. We pulled a line, extinguished the truck and the rest is history,” Overton said.

The driver escaped with no injuries and the fire did not spread to any surrounding brush or structures. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Workers at the construction site will now navigate unloading the flatbed before being able to move the destroyed truck.
