No new Island COVID-19 infections as number of active cases climbs past 350

NANAIMO — Another day on Vancouver Island where the COVID-19 curve remained flat.

No new cases in the Island Health region were part of 47 announced elsewhere in British Columbia, including one epi-linked case.

While four cases remain active in the Island Health region, Island Health said nobody is hospitalized regionally due to the virus.

A joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix showed the number of active cases in the province has climbed to 351, up from around 250 last week.

“As COVID-19 remains in our communities, so does the anxiety and stress that comes with the uncertainty, the increased isolation and the need to take precautions in everything we do,” the statement said.

The province said no new community outbreaks had been recorded, however the province continues to track a series of potential exposure events involving flights in and out of the province.

No exposure events are listed for the Island Health region as of Wednesday afternoon.

“Alerts are posted on the BC Centre for Disease Control’s and on health authorities’ websites, providing details on where the potential exposure occurred and what actions you need to take – whether you need to immediately self-isolate, or monitor for symptoms.”

The province again reported no new deaths as a result of COVID-19, leaving the number of people who have lost their lives to the virus at 195.

To date, 3,834 people have tested positive for coronavirus with over 94 per cent of people listed as fully recovered.

The Island Health region has recorded 146 total cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

Island Health later informed NanaimoNewsNOW this may have been a data input error and that nobody is hospitalized in their facilities due to the Coronavirus.
