NANAIMO — A 37-year-old woman was arrested following a string of road rage incidents through the city on Saturday, Aug. 1.

The torrent of activity began around 5:00 p.m. when the woman is alleged to have stopped in the slow lane of the Nanaimo Parkway and assaulted another driver.

The assault left numerous cuts and bruises to the female driver’s hands and head.

Further calls to 9-1-1 resulted shortly after when a vehicle, matching the description of the first incident, was said to have nearly hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Calder Rd. and Jingle Pot Rd.

“The witness told police, the vehicle was seen driving into oncoming traffic, then on to the curb and driving directly at the pedestrian,” Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a release. “The pedestrian was not struck. Although three of the tires were flattened from hitting the curb, the suspect driver continued on.”

Police finally caught up to the woman after people at Westwood Lake reported a someone there acting erratically.

“Numerous police officers attended and located the female sitting in the life guard tower,” O’Brien added. “Officers attempted to engage the female in conversation in an effort to de-escalate the situation”

Police believed the woman to be under the influence of either drugs or alcohol, or dealing with a medical crisis.

Officers were also sprayed with a liquid by the woman who said it would hurt them, however it is believed to be water.

Police arrested the woman a short distance away from Westwood Lake and faces charges including assault, assulting a police officer, dangerous driving, impaired driving and refusal to comply with a drug recognition expert test.

The woman was released Saturday night and is due to appear in court in November.
