Overdose advisory issued for Nanaimo as province grapples with increasingly tainted drug supply

NANAIMO — An overdose advisory has been issued specifically for Nanaimo in the wake of increasing overdoses.

Island Health published the advisory on Tuesday, July 14. An advisory for Cowichan and Victoria was released at the same time.

Nanaimo was previously included in a Vancouver Island-wide overdose advisory but not specifically listed.

The provincial overdose advisory has been in place for more than two months, first implemented in May.

At the time, former medical health officer Dr. Paul Hasselback said the overdoses seen had to do with smoking substances and not injecting them, which was unusual.

Island Health surpassed it’s previous highest month by 36 per cent with 38 fatalities.

By the end of May, 13 people had passed away in Nanaimo from illicit drugs.
