‘You aren’t leaving COVID-19 behind:’ caution urged for summer travellers

NANAIMO — Vancouver Island remained COVID-19 free throughout the first weekend of June.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said 29 new cases were recorded across B.C. since her last update on Friday, June 5.

None were on Vancouver Island, leaving the region’s total number of active or resolved cases at 130, with none currently considered active.

Dr. Henry spoke about the upcoming holiday travel season and said much like what has already happened during the pandemic, summer vacations will look a lot different this year.

“I’m encouraging all of us to be respectful of the communities we plan to visit and to be safe,” Dr. Henry said. “When you hit the open roads this summer, you aren’t leaving COVID-19 behind. We need to be aware of where we’re going, whether it’s a larger or small community.”

The number of active cases in B.C. stands at 183 as of Monday afternoon, with 16 in hospital and four in critical or intensive care. No new deaths were linked to COVID-19 since Friday.

Dr. Henry added the importance of adhering to the many restrictions which allowed B.C. to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic in a better position than most places in Canada.

“If you are ill, or someone in your family is not well, don’t go. If you’re already travelling and become ill, you need to isolate and stay away from others same as we do at home,” Dr. Henry said.
