Nanaimo RCMP searching for local man wanted for assault

NANAIMO — Local RCMP hope the public can help find a man wanted for a pair of alleged assaults against the same woman.

John Martin Bates is accused of assaulting a woman by hitting her in the face with a bowl during an February 2020 incident.

A second altercation in April saw Bates allegedly break a bowl over the woman’s head. In both cases, Bates took off before police arrived.

“Fortunately in both bases she was not injured. We’ve been unable to locate him so we’re hoping the public will assist,” Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Bates faces charges of assault and assault with a weapon. He is described as 5’6″ tall and 150 lbs., while the picture provided is recent.

He is from Nanaimo and police believe he’s still in the area.

Bates is not considered dangerous and if the public know his whereabouts, they’re encouraged to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345.
