NANAIMO – A young Nanaimo singer’s time in the American spotlight has come to an end after a stellar run.

Lauren Spencer-Smith unfortunately didn’t advance into American Idol’s Top 10, after making it all the way to the Top 20. She and eight others were eliminated from the popular singing competition after performing from her family home in Port Alberni.

“I’m so appreciative of everyone who took the time to vote and tune into the show,” she told fans in a social media post. “Although some might say this is a huge disappointment it is a huge accomplishment for all of my and my friends who were part of the top 20!

“I’m so proud of us all.”

She wowed the judges with a cover of the Jessie J song “Mamma Knows Best.”

“Your voice gets better and better,” judge and country music star Luke Bryan told her after the performance.

Judge Lionel Ritchie praised Spencer-Smith for her growth throughout the competition. “Your attitude is on point, I felt that you felt that song. You brought the attitude to the table.”

She was joined by her family on screen after belting out the song.

Spencer-Smith would have originally sung in front of judges in Los Angeles, but all performers sang from their own homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
