Nanaimo man arrested following attempted robbery & stabbing attack

NANAIMO — A man who is well-known to police now faces multiple charges after allegedly stabbing and attempting to rob a woman early Wednesday morning.

Police responded to a house on Glenayr Dr. around 2 a.m. on April 29 where a woman was found with several serious but non-life threatening stab wounds.

She was taken to hospital in Nanaimo for treatment.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW officers found the suspect, 31-year-old Michael Robert Hanson, a short distance away.

“When Mr. Hanson was arrested, we did locate a number of knives on his person and they were seized.”

Hanson knew the victim. He was charged with assault with a weapon, robbery and uttering death threats.

He was released from custody and is due in court on July 21.

Hanson’s criminal history stretches back to 2016 with numerous violations since then, including drug possession and theft.
