Obituary
With deep sorrow in our hearts, we announce the passing of Peter Davey Hann, on March 30, 2020, in Nanaimo, BC after a short illness.
He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his children Cathryn, Susan (Del), Nancy (Ken), and Peter Jr., grandchildren Michael (Cheryl), Patrick, and Saria, brother Brian (June), and nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Maija, and by his friend and music lover, Clara Davis.
Peter began his career in the travel industry with Canadian Pacific Airlines in 1953, with postings over 13 years in Mayo, Whitehorse, Castlegar, Vancouver, and Chicago. In 1966 he joined the Canadian Government Office of Tourism, today known as Destination Canada. During his 27-year career with the Canadian government he was posted in Den Haag, Netherlands; Cincinnati, Minneapolis and Dallas, USA; Sydney, Australia; and Ottawa, Edmonton and Saskatoon. The majority of his career was spent promoting tourism to Canada. He was such a proud Canadian and loved sharing Canada with the world.
Peter retired from the civil service in 1993 and moved to Parksville, British Columbia. He had spent many wonderful summers here as a child and then in later years with Maija and their children, so it was the logical place to settle down and enjoy retirement. Which, of course, wasn’t something he was able to do. He joined the local Rotary Clubs, received awards as Rotarian of the Year in 2003 and in 2011, was President of his Strata Council, served with Tourism Nanaimo and the Parksville Chamber of Commerce, and worked as a cruise agent with the Nanaimo Cruise Ship Centre.
He was so full of life and could regale you for hours with stories about travel and events. He loved playing his Hohner harmonica and had a playlist of over 400 songs. He could not read music, but he memorized all genres of tunes.
His family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the wonderful health care community that took such special care of Peter over the years: the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital ER department, 5th floor Rehab Floor and 1st Floor Acute Care, with special mentions to Dr. Towers, Dr. Hubner, his nurses Marisol, Keeva, Barb, Nicole, Marnie, and many others; the caring and supportive nursing staff of the VIHA Home Support – Dawn, Carmen, Noelle, Jenny; his long-time physician, Dr. Wagenaar of Qualicum Beach; his long-time dentist, Dr. Beaudoin of Parksville; and the caring staff at The Medicine Shoppe on Departure Bay Road in Nanaimo. We would also like to extend a special thank you to all of the staff at the Long Lake Chateau in Nanaimo where Peter lived – Jackie, Carrie, the administrative, housekeeping staff, dining and kitchen staff. You all helped to make the past few years comfortable and welcoming for Peter.
