Nanaimo’s Salvation Army brings meal program outdoors

Apr 10, 2020 | 10:50 AM

NANAIMO — Stomachs don’t have to go empty during the COVID-19 crisis.

Salvation Army Nanaimo recently put their emergency vehicle outfront the New Hope Centre in downtown Nanaimo to continue their meal program. Before, clients would enter the Centre and pick their meals up directly from the kitchen.

Bagged lunches are handed out from 12 to 1 p.m. and takeout dinner is served from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Fundraising coordinator Dawne Anderson told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s been an interesting transition as physical distancing becomes the norm.

“At the beginning, it was a little bit rougher because folks were trying to adjust to the new way of receiving their meals. But they’re slowly realizing social distancing is something which needs to be done and is good for all.”

Anderson confirmed the line for food is growing as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

The organization is also feeling the economic fallout of the situation as three thrift shops close. The thrift shops are a major revenue generator for the Salvation Army.
