Renowned track & field champion, longtime Nanaimo educator passes away
NANAIMO — A well known Nanaimo educator and decorated track and field star has passed away.
Phil Olsen, 63, died Sunday March 15 after suffering a heart attack while collecting firewood in the Nanaimo River Rd. area with his wife.
Olsen’s long list of athletic accomplishments includes competing in the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, while he captured a gold medal in Javelin at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.
Nancy Olsen told NanaimoNewsNOW she’ll miss her husband’s positive outlook on life.
