VERNON – The Clippers have earned their first win in Vernon since 2009.

It was far from a perfect start to the game with ex-Clipper Matt Kowalski scoring in the first minute.

But Liam Ryan responded 22 seconds later to get Nanaimo on track.

Josh Kagan then buried a rebound of a Josh Bourne shot at the six minute mark to put the Clippers in front to stay.

Kagan scored again in the last minute of the second to provide some insurance.

The Clippers gave up a power play goal to Connor Marritt in the final frame but only allowed five shots against in preserving a 3-2 win.

Nanaimo went 0-3 on the power play, while Vernon finished 1/4.

The Vipers outshot the Clippers 28-21 with Jordan Naylor picking up his 24th win of the season.

Nanaimo is on a three game winning streak and they’ve now closed to within seven points of the first place Cowichan Valley Capitals.

The Feb. 7 victory was the Clippers first in Vernon since January of 2009, breaking an 0-8-2 drought.
