June 16, 1935 ~ December 6, 2019 (age 84)
With great sadness we announce that Mel died at his home in Port Alberni surrounded by his family on Friday, December 6, 2019. He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 24 years, Suzanne; children, Danny Gulbrandsen, Tony Gulbrandsen, and Cindy Thomson; grandchildren, Megan White, Shannon Flury, Kelly Thomson, Kendra Edey, and Troy James; great grandchildren, Rylan Flury, Quinn Flury, Jake Flury, and Jaron Thomson; extended family members, Mike and Geraldine Scott, Brian and Jeanna Scott, Blake Scott, Jami Scott, and Tori Scott; as well as many, many friends. Mel was predeceased by his parents, Emma and Martin Gulbrandsen; children, Linda and Debbie Gulbrandsen; and sisters, Marie Gallivan and Marion Franklin.
Mel worked in the oil fields around Turner Valley as well as overseas and retired as a Millwright in Black Diamond. He loved the outdoors – especially fishing and hunting. Crosswords were not only a passion of Mel’s but no day was complete until he had completed at least one. He was also a proud and active member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Friends and family are encouraged to leave a memory of Mel on his tribute wall so that we may all share it. In keeping with his wishes, no services will be held. Those wishing to honour his memory may do so by making a donation in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society.
