JULY 31, 1929 ~ OCTOBER 10, 2018 (AGE 89)
Reg passed away peacefully after a short illness from cancer with his family by his side. He was 89.
Reggie was born at Kildonan, BC to Hyacinth Peter David (Tla-o-qui-aht) and Winnifred David {nee George/Hamilton} (Hupacasath)
He is pre-deceased by brothers Irvin, twins Ronald and Richard, Edward “Teddy” and George, sisters Linda Miller, Lorraine McCarthy, Stella, Patricia, and Theresa.
In 1950 he married Amelia Cootes, his devoted wife until her passing in 2002.
He was the eldest of 14 children. Reg was raised in Port Alberni until the age of 9 when he attended Christie Residential School on Meares Island. He returned to Port Alberni in 1949 and worked for McMillan Bloedel for 47.5 years ~ 36.5 years were with Sproat Lake Division.
For the past 15 years Reg enjoyed the love and caring of his partner Joanald.
He is survived by brothers Benedict (Grace) of Port Alberni, Douglas (Janice) of Houston Texas, Hyacinth Joseph David of Tofino and many wonderful nieces, nephews and their children to whom he was Grampa.
Reg loved home, family, friends, boats and the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and very skilled artist and carver, natural historian and keeper of knowledge within his culture. He knew the family histories throughout the coast. He was an all-round fine person. Reg always “told it like it was” – no beating around the bush. His parental lineages are throughout most Nuu-chah-nulth communities of Hupacasath, Tla-o-qui-aht, Ditidaht, Kyuquot, Tseshaht, and Ucluelet First Nations.
He enjoyed a long life and was loved dearly by many, many friends, colleagues and locals of Port Alberni and Nuu-chah-nulth Communities. He meant so much to so many. Words cannot describe the ways he will be missed.
No service at his request.
Special thanks to Dr. Daryl Lund for being his best Doctor and to Reg’s niece Bonnie David.
