OCTOBER 30, 1930 ~ NOVEMBER 14, 2018 (AGE 88)
Joan Groot passed away peacefully at Trillium Lodge in Parksville, BC after a lengthy battle with Alzheimers. She died in the arms of her daughter Linda. She was predeceased by her first husband Tom Glenwright and her second husband Peter Groot. She is survived by brother Ted Konings (Aline); her seven children and their spouses; her six stepdaughters and their spouses; one foster son and spouse; many grandchildren and their spouses; and many great grandchildren. Joan left behind a legacy of love that deeply touched all who knew her. She was widowed at a young age but found love again when she met Peter Groot. Peter’s family was embraced by Joan just as her family was embraced by Peter.
Joan and Peter moved to Vancouver Island from Winnipeg, Manitoba, where they enjoyed retired life together. Joan took a great deal of pride in her role as a stay at home Mom, but she was particularly proud of the career she assumed as Executive Secretary of the Children’s Aid Society in Winnipeg after her children were grown.
Her children have a wealth of treasured memories but all recall with particular fondness the time spent at the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach, a place where friends and family were always warmly welcomed. Her grandchildren all remember Grandma taking them for a beer when they reached the age of majority. Joan’s greatest wish was to see her grandchildren fully grown and settled in life. She was especially pleased to welcome great grandchildren into the world.
Joan was a woman of uncommon and singular grace, dignity and compassion. She was loved by all who knew her and she returned that love many times over.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at Trillium Lodge and to Dr Szachnowska for the care and compassion offered to Joan.
A funeral will take place on Wednesday, November 21st at the Church of the Ascension in Parksville.
