NANAIMO – The last bonspiel of 2019 has wrapped up at the Nanaimo Curling Centre.

The Masters Open Bonspiel featured 28 teams, about half from the Harbour City and most of the rest from the central island.

As an open event the rinks could be men’s, women’s or mixed.

Club general manager Andrea Trepanier said it was the only masters bonspiel hosted in Nanaimo in the 2019-20 season.

“This is a fairly large one. It’s nice to see all these curlers out there doing their thing after they turn 60.”

Trepanier said all the nearby clubs host their own masters bonspiel and they coordinate schedules so curlers throughout the region can participate in each one.

The masters was the final on ice event of 2019 at the curling club and finished off two straight weekends of competition.

Nov. 15-17 the club held the Hangover Bonspiel which included 34 teams.

Trepanier said the new year is going to be very busy at the Nanaimo Curling Centre.

“Right after Christmas we have the men’s bonspiel starting Jan. 11th, we have an intraclub seniors bonspiel which is a fundraiser for hospice, we have the women’s bonspiel Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, and then we have our ‘Super Spiel’ Feb. 6-9 with 64 teams and $10,000 in cash prizes.”

Every second year Nanaimo gets to host a major Curl BC event, the last one was the BC Masters Championship in March of 2019.

Trepanier told NanaimoNewsNOW that the club would be most likely getting a championship in 2021 but it’s unknown what that will be.

Curling clubs in the region aren’t slowing down Christmas just yet.

Parksville is hosting a men’s bonspiel Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, a junior event in Qualicum Beach Dec. 7 and the Parksville Stick Bonspiel runs Dec. 13 to 15.
