3 notable multi-family apartment projects endorsed as building boom continues

NANAIMO — Housing density in Nanaimo is slated to get a further boost following public hearings for three multi-family developments.

One hundred and sixty seven housing units in south Nanaimo and off Rutherford Rd. passed third reading after public hearings Thursday, Nov. 8.

The Robin’s Grove housing development in the south end and 76-unit building on Songbird Pl. near Nanaimo North Town Centre now only require final adoption from Nanaimo city council.

The Robin’s Grove development involves a combined 91 units at 155 Fry St. and neighbouring 150 Esplanade St., according to a City staff report. The new units will be built beside an existing 14-unit multi-family building.

The Fry St. development would include a small commercial space component and public plaza where the applicant intends to place art work.

It was unanimously approved by council and there were no objections reported by the South End Community Association.

The Songbird Pl. project features a v-shaped, four-storey building on a vacant lot across from the old Sears parking lot.

The 76-unit development will include underground and some surface parking, according to the City.

Off-site intersection upgrades on Uplands Dr. and Songbird Pl. are included in the proposal, as is a multi-use trail linking Songbird Pl. and Rutherford Rd.

Only councillor Sheryl Armstrong opposed the Songbird Pl. development, to be located beside a 63-unit development constructed in 2015.

It has been a record year for construction activity in Nanaimo, which is on track to top $400 million in building permit value in city limits in 2019.
