Clippers suffer 3-2 overtime setback to Grizzlies

NANAIMO – The Clippers earned a point and have moved into a first place tie in the Island Division.

But the Oct. 25 OT loss to Victoria also felt like a point lost.

The Grizzlies won the game 3-2 in OT despite Nanaimo leading the game well into the third period.

Cody Monds opened the scoring for the Grizzlies in the first period, but Sean Donaldson and Liam Ryan gave the Clippers a 2-1 lead with a pair of second period tallies.

Nanaimo was at their best in the second period and outshot Victoria 18-7.

A too many men on the ice penalty proved costly in the third with the Grizzlies getting a power play goal from Marty Westhaver to pull even.

Eddie Yan went in alone in three on three overtime to provide the winning goal for Victoria.

At 10-5-1-1 Nanaimo is tied with Cowichan Valley with 22 points for a share of first in the Island Division.

The Clippers are back on the ice Sunday at 2 p.m. against the Vernon Vipers.

Sunday will also wrap up Nanaimo’s annual parents weekend.

The Clippers had all of the player’s families on the ice to be recognized before Friday’s contest.
