Bright gear being handed out to combat darker days

NANAIMO — Police are once again doing what they can to hammer home a critical message during the shorter, darker days as winter approaches.

Reflective arm bands and zipper pulls will be handed out at Woodgrove Centre on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The reflective gear can also be picked up during regular business hours at the Nanaimo RCMP detachment.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said most vehicle-pedestrian collisions happen in or near crosswalks in the late afternoon on Wednesday and Thursdays.

“The majority of these accidents are being caused by drivers not paying attention and they’re not yielding to the right of way of pedestrians in crosswalks.”

O’Brien said while pedestrians have the right of way in a crosswalk, it doesn’t mean they can throw caution to the wind.

“You’re putting your life in your own hands when you’re crossing a crosswalk without attempting to make eye contact or seeing the approaching car is slowing down.”
