Nanaimo rower to represent Canada in New Zealand Regatta

NANAIMO – A local rower will represent Canada half the world away at an international regatta in New Zealand.

Jordan Isnor, 19, will be on Canada’s U21 team for the Trans-Tasman Regatta from August 22 to 24.

She was one of five women chosen to compete against athletes from Australia and New Zealand. She’ll compete in the lightweight singles contest.

Isnor said this isn’t the first time she’s had the privilege of representing Canada.

“Last year I was in the CanAmMex Regatta, that was Canada, the US, and Mexico and that was really cool.”

She finished with a time of 8:51:03 at the event.

This summer she’s hard at work to shave valuable seconds off her CanAmMex Regatta time.

“I’d like to get sub eight minutes on the water,” Isnor said. “It’s hard to say because conditions really vary with the wind. I think that would be really ideal in the near future.”

Isnor spent most of her teenage years with the Nanaimo Rowing Club and just completed her first year with Brock University’s rowing team.

Two of her classmates at Brock, Thomas Markewich and Sam Stewart, are also a part of Canada’s entry for the Trans-Tasman Regatta.

In late June, Isnor was back in Nanaimo training on Long Lake.

She spoke very highly of the coaching she received during her time at the Nanaimo Rowing Club.

““I don’t think I’d be where I am today without Craig (Rutherford). We’re a small club but he definitely has workouts that work for us and we definitely see results.”

Ultimately Isnor would like to compete at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

She isn’t targeting the 2019 event in Florida. Instead she’s looking further down the road.

“I’m hoping to have a couple of years to build my strength and get faster in the water,” Isnor said. “Then by 2021 or 2022 I’m going to try out for that and hopefully see some good results.”

Isnor’s next competition is the 137^th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta from August 6 to 11 in St. Catharines Ontario.
