Parksville starts unique security camera rebate program

Jun 28, 2019 | 10:47 AM

PARKSVILLE — The cost of security has gone down in Parksville.

The City, following through on a motion from coun. Mark Chandler on June 17, is providing a rebate to Parksville residents who buy security cameras for their property.

“Crime is increasing in the community,” Chandler told councillors, citing comments from residents and Oceanside RCMP.

“The City itself has experienced several recent vandalism events, causing significant damage to trees, playground equipment and washroom facilities among other things.”

Up to $100 will be given to residents who buy and install cameras after July 2.

The cameras must be installed on the exterior of houses or both inside and outside for businesses.

The City of Parksville is funding $2,500 this year on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Available funds for the rebate increase to $5,000 in 2020.

It’s believed this rebate program is the first of its kind in B.C. to be offered by a municipality.

An application form can be found here.
