NANAIMO — A yearly initiative hopes to keep as many cars off the road and help Nanaimo residents be more healthy.

Bike to Work and School Week began on Monday, May 27. Riders log the kilometres they’ve cycled instead of driven.

A release from the City of Nanaimo said staff are working to double the amount of active transportation trips, which includes cycling and running, by 2041.

The Commuter challenge begins the next week, which also tracks trips on public transit as a method of getting around.

Each event has stations set up along paths and at transit hubs to promote the challenges and entice people out of their cars.

NanaimoNewsNOW reporter Spencer Sterritt is ditching his car and riding his bike everywhere all week. He’ll have a feature about how the week went once Bike to Work Week finishes.
