Area athletes start May on a high-note

NANAIMO — May started with a multitude of successes for several local athletes.

The Nanaimo Diamonds U16B team won the Silver Bracket Championship at the 2019 Kelowna Minor Fastball U16B Spring Sizzle tournament over the weekend.

The only Vancouver Island team at the event won all three games in the championship round on Sunday and defeated the South Surrey Thunder for the gold.

MVP awards went to Emma Mitrenga, Kaitlin Pierce, and Gracie Alyward in the round robin portion of the tournament.

At the same time, the first open tournament of the lawn bowling season went under clear skies at the Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club.

A Parksville team of Kate Wilson, Keith Baker and Bill Burgess triumphed over 27 other teams from across the Island and Powell River.

The club will host the Ramsay Lampman Rhodes mixed fours open tournament on May 25 and 26.
