BCHL’s leading scorer the difference in Clippers 10-6 loss to Victoria

COLWOOD – The Clippers were done in by a huge night from Alex Newhook in a 10-6 loss to the Grizzlies.

It was 2-0 Grizzlies after one on a breakaway goal by the BCHL’s leading scorer Alex Newhook, and a shot through a screen by Cameron Thompson.

The Clippers were outshot 11-7 with Landon Pavlisin forced into making some difficult stops for the visitors.

The game exploded in the second period with Kyle McGrath making the score 3-0 five minutes in.

Nanaimo tied the game 3-3 with goals by Sammy Steele, Kyler Kovich, and Thomas Samuelsen all in a three minute span.

Newhook scored 25 seconds later to put the Grizzlies back in front, and 90 seconds after that Charlie Campbell extended the lead to 5-3.

Then the Clippers went back to work, with goals by Josh Bourne and Marcus Mitchell beating Kurtis Chapman before an eight goal second period came to an end.

In the third period the scoring parade continued with Kenny Johnson putting Victoria back on top and Tyler Williams evening the game yet again.

But the Grizzlies capped the night with four straight by Riley Hughes, Johnson, Newhook and Jeremie Bucheler.

Newhook finished with an eight point night, and recorded his 100thpoint of the season for Victoria.

Nanaimo’s line of Williams, Bourne, and Mitchell combined for eight points for the second game in a row, albeit in a losing cause.

The final shots were 41-36 for Nanaimo with the power plays finishing 0/1 for the Clippers and 2/3 for the Grizzlies.

Friday’s Three Stars were Alex Newhook (3g 5a), Kenny Johnson (2g 1a), Josh Bourne (1g 1a).

The Clippers will wrap up the regular season at home against the Powell River Kings on Saturday.
