Nanaimo Wetlands chosen for National Study

One of Nanaimo’s better kept secrets is getting some national attention.

Buttertubs Marsh off Bowen Road is one of five sites in Canada chosen to be part of a pilot study on managing natural capital

Natural capital refers to things like water, air, land, renewable and non-renewable resources.

The City of Nanaimo’s Environmental Planner Rob Lawrance says the study will show the importance of this particular piece of land

“This is really a key part of our infrastructure. We may not directly pay for it through our taxes, but it still contributes to how we function as a community. And I think this exercise will prove that,”said Lawrance

According to Lawrance, it’s also a great opportunity for the city.

“I know there was a lot of communities interested in taking part in this and I think it shows a lot of innovation and opportunity that the city is willing to pursue to look at something that’s quite cutting edge in the country right now.”

The study is scheduled to begin in August and wrap up in December 2017.
