Recently released prolific offender accused in truck attack on Nanaimo Mounties

NANAIMO — Two Nanaimo men, including one fresh out of jail, have been charged for an alleged shocking attack on two RCMP officers.

Majore Jackson, 32, and Andrew Bellwood, 47, are charged with a combined nine offences after a high-profile incident in Yellow Point Wednesday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP said two officers were left with minor injuries after their undercover vehicles were destroyed when a large truck deliberately drove over their hoods and into one of the windshields. A pair of suspects were arrested following a brief foot chase in the area of Yellow Point Rd. and Roberts Rd., south of Nanaimo.

Jackson, the alleged driver of the stolen truck, faces six charges, including a pair of counts of assault with a weapon.

Bellwood, the alleged passenger, has an extensive criminal record.

He recently served a 30-day sentence for theft under $5,000.

Court records showed Bellwood was slated to be released from jail the same day as the Yellow Point incident, however multiple government entities wouldn’t confirm to NanaimoNewsNOW when he was set free, citing privacy reasons.

Bellwood was also sentenced in 2016 to eight-and-a-half months in jail for a break-and-enter in Nanaimo, court records showed.

Jackson’s record includes a three-month jail term in 2007 for a property crime offence in Nanaimo.

Jackson and Bellwood both made court appearances Thursday in Nanaimo in relation to the Yellow Point episode and remain in custody.

They have since been transferred to the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre in Victoria and are scheduled to make their next court appearances in Nanaimo via video on May 1.
