Clippers shut down by Centennials in 5-1 loss

MERRITT – Former Clipper goalie Austin Roden and the Merritt Centennials defeated Nanaimo 5-1 on Saturday night.

First period goals by Christian Sabin and Joey Berkopec got the Cents off to a fast start in the opening 20 minutes.

The Clippers outshot Merritt 10-5 in the second but the only goal was scored by the Centennials Bradley Cocca.

Matthew Kopperud beat Landon Pavlisin midway through the third period to up the lead to 4-0, before Kyler Kovich scored Nanaimo’s only goal on a shorthanded breakaway.

Nicholas Wicks finished off the scoring by connecting on a Centennials five on three.

The final shots were 34-23 for Merritt with the power plays ending up 0/5 for the Clippers and 1/7 for the Centennials.

Saturday’s Three Stars were Nicholas Wicks (1g 2a), Austin Roden (22 saves), and Bradley Cocca (1g 1a).

The Clippers look to end a five game losing streak when they travel to Langley on Sunday afternoon for a 2 p.m. matinee game.
