Clippers lose opening night playoff battle 3-2 to the Kings

POWELL RIVER – The Clippers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Kings on Friday in Game 1 of the BCHL playoffs.

It was the type of a back and forth battle you’d expect from two rivals who are meeting for the second year in a row in the opening round of the post season.

Powell River scored early in the first period on a goal mouth tip in by Levi Glasman.

That was the only goal until Hunor Torzsok shot a puck in from the right side that fooled Mitch Adamyk three minutes into the second.

A power play one timer by Ben Berard got the Kings back in front, before Sammy Steele evened things up once again with a shot that looped over top of Adamyk.

Late in the second period a controversial call saw Clippers captain Marcus Mitchell given a blow to the head major and a game misconduct for a check on Ben Wozney.

The Clippers disputed the call, which carries with it the likelihood of supplemental discipline.

In the third period the Kings earned the game winner on a goal by Mitchell Williams.

Jordan Naylor stopped an initial shot but couldn’t get across in time to make the second save.

The final shots finished 33-29 for the Kings and the power plays ended up 0/2 for Nanaimo and 1/4 for Powell River.

Friday’s Three Stars were Levi Glasman (1g 2a), Mitchell Williams (1g), and Sammy Steele (1g).

There’s a short turnaround before Game 2 which is a 5 p.m. start Saturday at the Hap Parker Arena.

Game 3 and Game 4 are Monday and Tuesday in Nanaimo.
