‘We’re taking this seriously:’ police probe arson spree at Nanaimo school

Apr 18, 2019 | 10:34 AM

NANAIMO — Eight purposely set fires ignited at Brechin Elementary School this month has authorities increasingly concerned.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the fires were small, with two of them started inside the school while it was open.

He said the most serious blaze in Brechin’s basement on April 3 caused $5,000 worth of damage and a lengthy evacuation.

“We are not taking this lightly at all,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We are working in conjunction with the fire inspectors and with the school district…our fear is it could escalate and we want to put a stop to it as fast as we can.”

O’Brien said most of the fires at the Millstone Ave. school involved paper and clothing as ignition sources.

“It could be a student, we’re probably headed in that direction, but we need the assistance of the public.”

Nobody was injured as a result of any of the fires.

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools is fully engaged and cooperating with helping to solve the case, O’Brien said.

Anybody with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
