NANAIMO — A new soup program for Nanaimo’s homeless wants to make sure they don’t go to bed hungry.

Starting Sunday, March 11, soup will be available at 150 Nicol St. every night between 6 and 10 p.m.

Organizer Tanya Hiltz said there’s community support for those experiencing homelessness during the day, but night time is a different story.

“Let’s give a big credit to the 7-10 Club, they do their thing in the morning. But let’s now take it a step further and make sure they don’t go to bed hungry at night. Let’s give them something hot and filling.”

Hiltz said a hot meal before bed was heavily asked for by the homeless people she and the Wisteria Lane Association are trying to help.

The soup will be prepared in a commercial kitchen and handed out at the Nicol St. site where a parking lot will be utilized as best it can.

Hiltz said this is a show of support from the community, since the soup is sponsored by local organizations and grocery stores and also has the backing of medical health officer Dr. Paul Hasselback.
