Oceanside RCMP K9 unit brought in to capture suspicious suspect

PARKSVILLE — Oceanside RCMP had to bring out the dogs to catch a man who’d been acting suspiciously.

According to RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman, the K9 unit was called after Wayne Douglas Lyster, 45, fled from police. He’d initially been found lying on the ground of the Little Qualicum Falls Park parking lot just after 12 p.m. on March 31. 

Lyster had two outstanding arrest warrants on file by Nanaimo RCMP. When Oceanside officers tried to arrest him, Lyster ran into the woods.

Foreman said the dogs tried to find Lyster for more than two hours, covering “ several kilometres to the point where the dog got quite tired and needed a break.”

Several hours later at 5:15 p.m., the K9 unit spotted Lyster attempting to hitchhike at the 4a intersection of the Alberni Highway.

The officer pulled over and tried to arrest Lyster for the second time.

“He again made the decision, not the wise decision, to run and try to flee again from the Dog Master and his K9,” Foreman said. “They tracked him quickly and affected a quick arrest right in that area.”

Lyster’s next appearance at Nanaimo Provincial Court is Tuesday, April 11.
