NANAIMO — A new vehicle is transforming the way the Harbour City’s Salvation Army branch is working in the community.

After using a makeshift and renovated refrigeration truck for several years, the Nanaimo Salvation Army is moving forward with its daily hot breakfast program inside a specialized emergency response style food truck, designed to prep, cook, store, and serve meals to those in need.

Executive director Bern Muller told NanaimoNewsNOW the vehicle is now in operation, allowing for 65 meals to be produced and handed out in a variety of strategic locations five days a week.

“Being able to serve more meals, to be able to deliver meals in better conditions with refrigeration on board, with three sinks on board, even the capacity to be able to cook if we need to. That vehicle will be able to support the community, as well as there may be need, we’re able to respond.”

Muller said it’s expected the vehicle will have a fully outfitted functional kitchen in two weeks, allowing for upwards of 100 meals per day to be produced between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., with the hope of expanding to seven days a week.

Muller said additional volunteers will be required to provide a daily delivered breakfast service, which also includes handing out basic comfort items for the unhoused community.

Over recent years, food prep for both the breakfast program and other outreach has occurred at the former White Spot restaurant location on Terminal Ave., with meals then transported to the New Hope Centre downtown.

Muller said the new vehicle enables them to serve people more efficiently than in the past.

“There’s been some response from the community to try and deliver meals, there’s been some work done to try and coordinate those efforts as well, there are churches and some of the nonprofits that are supporting that need. What we’re providing is a seven-day-a-week breakfast…to support people who are trying to start their day on some pretty brutal conditions.”

The addition of the dedicated vehicle comes as renovations to the New Hope Centre on Esplanade near completion.

While new dorm rooms are largely complete and awaiting furniture, a renovated downstairs dining hall remains under construction.

It’s expected the facility will open to the public and Salvation Army clients in mid June.

Still under construction, the downtown New Hope Centre dining is expected to open within the next several weeks.
