More beach accessibility mats rolling out in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Additional options are now available to make Nanaimo’s popular waterfront areas more accessible, including at Maffeo Sutton Park.

Sway-a-Lana Lagoon is the sixth site for the evolving Mobi-Mats program, featuring non-slip mats at several fresh and saltwater locations around the city.

Kirsty MacDonald, the City’s manager of parks operations, said existing mats have been re-rolled and cleared of debris.

“The Mobi-Mats are not only used by people that have wheelchairs and mobility aids, but also all types of wheels, including strollers, wagons and even kayak trailers,” MacDonald told NanaimoNewsNOW

Launched in 2022 by the City’s Accessibility and Inclusiveness Committee, MacDonald said Mobi-Mats became year-round amenities in 2024, as opposed to only spring/summer season offerings.

In addition to the new Mobi-Mat at Maffeo Sutton Park, the accessibility devices are also available at Neck Point Park (Finn Beach), Departure Bay Beach, Loudon Park, Colliery Dam Park and Westwood Lake Park (First Beach).

By the end of May, the seventh Mobi-Mat site will be unveiled at Pipers Lagoon Park, MacDonald said.

Improving various forms of waterfront access is a priority for the City, MacDonald said.

“As far as where it will go in the future, we probably will have other locations identified. At the present, we’re incrementally increasing.”

MacDonald noted the condition of Mobi-Mats can be quite variable.

“The mats are inspected by staff once a week, but users definitely should be aware that the conditions can change on the tidal sites and assistance might be required.”

An extended over 130-foot-long Mobi-Mat is also available at Parksville Beach.
