NANAIMO — More than $4 million will benefit a local company’s ability to establish an advanced robotics facility to construct wooden trusses.

The funds to benefit Atlas Engineered Products Ltd. will allow the company to build a “cutting-edge wood manufacturing facility” to boost efficiency and reduce waste.

According to Natural Resources Canada, the company intends to build the new facility in Clinton, Ontario.

The funding was announced on Thursday, April 9 in Vancouver by Corey Hogan, parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources at the BC Council of Forest Industries annual convention.

The government news release outlined the need to strengthen Canada’s forestry industry in the face of damaging U.S. trade tariffs, with the Atlas Engineered Products funding strengthening “the wood construction supply chain and expand Canada’s capacity to produce high value, made-in-Canada building materials.”

The release noted Canada’s forestry industry has long been built on innovation.

“By combining Canadian resources with cutting-edge technology, projects like this are creating good jobs, strengthening our supply chains and helping us build more homes and diversify our exports,” Hogan stated in the release.

Atlas Engineered Products includes a network of small to medium-sized businesses in Nanaimo, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick.

The funding comes from Natural Resources Canada’s Investments in Forests Industry Transformation program.
