Clippers Rimmer gets league recognition

NANAIMO — For the first time this BCHL season, a Nanaimo Clipper has been named the first star of the week in the BCHL.

Forward Jack Rimmer had back-to-back two-goal games plus one assist in victories over Alberni Valley and Coquitlam.

The 20-year-old was named the first star in both of those contests and helped the team snap a four-game losing streak.

Rimmer said there was extra motivation, as most of the team had their family in town for the last two games.

“It helped we had that parents weekend, it was nice to see my family and that helped. It’s also being confident. There’s only a few games left in the season and it’s my last year. It also helps playing with really good players.”

Rimmer took centre stage with his performance on Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14, but he said his linemates Hayden Fechner and Caden Okovita deserve much of the credit as well.

Fechner and Rimmer have proved a lethan combination for most of the Clippers’ season.

“Okovita I actually played with when he was 15 and I was 17. He got called up to my junior team in Toronto, and it was a full circle moment when he signed with Nanaimo. He’s been unbelievable, he’s got such a motor, and he plays a mature game. They’re both super easy to play with.”

As a team leader, Rimmer is a good barometer as to how the Clippers are playing.

He had only one assist during the club’s recent four-game losing streak, and he had some important words to the team to help them get out of it.

“I think it was after the third or fourth loss we kind of sat in the room and said what needed to change. I spoke up and said this is the time of the year it’s easy to focus on the future and I just sort of told everyone to be where your feet are. You only get to play junior hockey once and college teams want players that are winners. So just focus on today, the older I get, the more I realize if you do the right thing and be a good teammate, good things will happen to you.”

In 2024, Rimmer won the Centennial Cup with Collingwood of the OJHL and his championship experience is a valuable asset.

He’s also shown this season he’s a clutch player, leading the entire BCHL with eight game-winning goals.

“That championship was the most fun I’ve ever had,” Rimmer explained. “There’s no negativity, we were a brotherhood and a family. Everyone knew if you played your role good things were going to happen. The experience is more than just hockey.”

Rimmer and the Clippers have five games remaining in their regular season, including home contests with Powell River and West Kelowna on Friday, March 20 and Sunday, March 22.

Nanaimo is in second place in the Coastal West division with an eight-point lead on the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and a ten-point lead over the Victoria Grizzlies.

A win or overtime point will clinch the second seed for the Clippers in round one of the playoffs.
