Changes coming to Nanaimo Parkway/Jingle Pot/Mostar intersection

NANAIMO — Notable traffic pattern adjustments are being made to enhance vehicular capacity and flow at an increasingly busy Nanaimo Parkway intersection.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MTT) stated work expected to begin late Monday, March 16 primarily takes place during the overnight hours until the end of next week to improve the intersection.

“The work will add a protected left‑turn lane from Jingle Pot Road to northbound Highway 19, along with two through lanes toward Mostar Road, new traffic signals, and updated overhead signage,” an MTT statement to NanaimoNewsNOW read.

Up until now, the intersection for Jingle Pot Rd. motorists proceeding toward Hwy. 19 (Nanaimo Parkway) provided two-lanes, periodically leading to backlogged traffic attempting to leave the growing area.

Motorists are told to slow down, obey traffic control personnel and watch for night crews.

The Nanaimo Parkway/Jingle Pot/Mostar intersection was one of three recommended to the ministry to immediately be converted from signal-controlled to interchanges in the 2021 Nanaimo Parkway and Nanoose Bay Corridor study.

According to the five-year-old probe compiled for the B.C. government, only the Cedar Rd/Trans Canada Hwy. and College Dr/Fifth St. intersections were not recommended for interchanges between south Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay.

No major capital projects speak to the Hwy. 19 or Nanaimo Parkway sections of highway in the recent B.C. government budget, which includes the MTT service plan through the 2028/29 year.
