Emergency route planning begins

Mar 13, 2026 | 10:06 AM

The Alberni Clayoquot Regional District has launched the process towards establishing an emergency access route should the highway around Cameron Lake be closed again.
Yesterday, ACRD Special Projects Director Mike Irg presented his draft report to the ACRD Regional Transportation Committee.
“This report presents the next steps to identify a viable emergency access route for our region with the goal towards preparing a coordinated lobbying effort,” he said. “The 2023 Cameron Bluffs wildfire demonstrated the regions vulnerability, demonstrated the need for a formal emergency route that is readily available, quickly activated, and reliable year round.”
Irg says the choice is either the Horne Lake or Cowichan Lake routes, and local leaders need to stand behind one choice route for lobbying to be effective.
The report will go out for community discussion and debate to establish consensus.
