Clippers look to regroup after back to back losses

NANAIMO — The Clippers ended the month of February with back to back losses.

It was the first time the club had lost consecutive games in regulation time since Dec. 16 and 19, with Nanaimo losing 3-1 to the Victoria Grizzlies on Feb. 27 and 7-4 to the Powell River Kings on Feb. 28.

Team captain Will Subject said the group will learn from the setback.

“There were a couple of positives but there’s a lot of things we need to clean up and fix. It’s good maybe to get a piece of humble pie going into the weekend and heading into playoffs.”

The Clippers struggled for large stretches playing with out some of the players and coaching staff due to illness and suspensions.

Coach Colin Birkas and forwards Caden Okovita and Charles Beland missed both games while coach Evan Richardson and Sam Boisvert also sat out the second contest.

Subject said the missing bodies can’t be used as an excuse for the losses.

“It definitely has an impact but it shouldn’t be that we’re missing some guys so it’s ok to take the night off. Guys know there’s people missing and there’s more opportunity for us to step up.”

The Clippers are heading into a rematch with Victoria on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 with a home and home series.

Getting to see the team they just lost against offers an opportunity to make amends for a poor weekend according to forward Jack Rimmer.

“It’s something we want to move past and not think about too much and focus on this week at practice. They don’t like us and we don’t like them so it’s a good rivalry. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing against we’re just focused on ourselves.”

Nanaimo has nine games in the month of March and four of those are against the Grizzlies.

Veteran Tanner Bruender know the rivalry with Victoria will have a lot to do with the Clippers playoff positioning.

“There’s a fire underneath us so we want to go in and take four points from them this weekend. I think we have a whole other level to get to. There’s a lot to work on but I think we’re going to get there eventually.”

The Clippers are poised to have a full roster and coaching staff for their next game with the exception of players on the long term injured list Justin Collins and Hudson Gill.

In other Clippers news Bruender was given an honourable mention for the BCHL’s 3 Stars of the Week with 11 points in nine games and Subject announced his NCAA Division 1 college commitment to Maryville University.
