VIU Mariners win PACWEST women’s volleyball crown

Mar 2, 2026 | 1:13 PM

ABBOTSFORD — For the third year in a row the VIU Mariners women’s volleyball team are provincial champions.

They took out top seeded Capilano University in a five-set match on Saturday, Feb. 28.

Coach Shane Hyde said the group was fully confident despite not being the favourite going into the tournament.

“I think a lot of people ruled us out. They didn’t think that we were the VIU team they’ve seen before and we knew who we were and it’s pretty awesome to be back.”

Capilano had only lost one match all season and it was against VIU.

“We knew what we were doing,” Hyde said. “We had a game plan and we stuck to it. We’re pretty excited and proud of the girls for sure.”

The Mariner women won CCAA national titles four times in a row from 2018 to 2022 and are coming off a silver medal performance in 2024 and a bronze medal effort in 2025.

Hyde and the team are hungry to bring national gold back from their trip to Niverville, Manitoba which will feature matches from March 11-14.

“We didn’t come this far just to be happy to be there. We’re going there to try and win it.”

At PACWEST provincials Regan Ingram was named tournament MVP while Lauren Hoard and Jordy Exner were chosen as tournament all-stars.

The men’s Mariners also made an appearance at provincials but lost out to College of the Rockies in the final.

With a PACWEST wild card slot the men will also advance to their national tournament March 11-14 in Edmonton.
