VICTORIA — B.C. is planning to adopt daylight savings time year-round, effective Sunday.

After decades of campaigning against the twice-annual adjustment of the clocks, Premier David Eby announced Monday, March 2 the yearly ‘spring forward’ which will take place on Sunday, March 8 will be the final adjustment of the clocks.

The move scraps an originally scheduled shift back into standard time on Nov. 1, and marks full-time adoption of the summer schedule.

“This decision isn’t just about clocks. It’s about making life easier for families, reducing disruptions for businesses and supporting a stable, thriving economy. I am hopeful that our American neighbours will soon join us in ending disruptive time changes.”

Pacific time will be seven hours behind the co-ordinated universal time (UTC-7) year round.

Repeated studies have shown overwhelming support for adoption of daylight savings time as the new permanent clock.

In 2019, a provincial public engagement survey found 93 per cent of respondents supported year-round daylight savings time, with occupational groups also supporting to the tune of 90 per cent.

The move will result in more evening light during the winter months, however will mean school classes beginning in darker conditions.

Better sleep patterns, consistency for planning transportation and technology services, as well as a reduce administrative cost for small business were all highlighted as benefits for ditching the switch.

B.C. had previously said it was keen to implement the change, however only if U.S. states like California, Washington and Oregon followed suit, as well as the Yukon.

This change aligns B.C. with Yukon year-round, while Pacific American states are in the process of implementing similar legislation, according to the province.

Eastern communities which observe mountain time will not be affected by this change, outside of being more aligned with B.C.’s clocks for a greater period during the year.
