NANAIMO — Six local high schools are competing in four divisions at the Vancouver Island high school basketball championships.

The games will run from Thursday, Feb. 19 to Saturday, Feb. 21 at schools in Victoria, Shawnigan Lake and Duncan.

Dover Bay and Nanaimo District Secondary are both in the 4A bracket, with Dover a clear favourite as the number one seed on the Island and the top ranking in the entire province.

Coach Darren Seaman said the Dolphins aren’t taking anything for granted.

“Of course, our expectations are high for ourselves. We also respect the competition that we will see and are preparing for every game to be a battle.”

NDSS coach Graham Giske has a young team, but feels the group is playing it’s best basketball heading into the Islands.

“We’ve started three Grade 11’s and two Grade 10’s all year. We can beat anybody but we can also play to the level of any team. We play Claremont and we’re going in with an attitude of feeling prepared and focusing on the things we can control.”

In 3A Wellington Secondary is the North Island number two seed heading into their tournament.

Coach Luke Letham said it’s the strongest field he can remember in his 17 years at Wellington.

“There are no easy games as there are five teams in the tourney that are ranked in the top 15 in the province. We have been missing some key guys due to injury and sickness and we are finally back at full health. We have had a good week of practice and feel prepared going into this weekend.”

Ladysmith Secondary will compete as the North Island’s fourth seed in the 2A tournament and there are two local squads in the 1A event.

Nanaimo Christian School is the second seed in the north while Cedar Secondary is fourth.

Breanne Quist with the Nanaimo Christian School said the senior boys have had a strong season to date.

“They have had many close games with provincially ranked teams. We are hopeful that they can finish their season strong with earning a spot at provincials in the upcoming Island championship.”
